Results from personalized and portable monitoring 

Konstanz, December 2017. The overall scientific goal of the collaboration between HTWG Konstanz (Prof. Dr. Seepold), Slovak University of Technology (Prof. Dr. Lehocki) and Reutlingen University (Prof. Dr. Martínez Madrid) is to detect and analyze a person's emotion with the help of a sensor network in order to support diagnostic decisions. In this project, emotion detection requires personalized analysis of a multi-dimensional set of parameters in real-time. The set of acquired parameters include different bio vital data (like ECG, EEG, skin conductivity, etc.) together with non- bio vital data (like location, movement/activity detection, activity in social media, etc.). These parameters are stored in a time-series of multidimensional matrices. Different parameters of both types (vital and non-vital) can be combined in subsets to perform pattern-based emotion recognition. For example, stress is associated with certain ECG-patterns (increased heart rate), and the recognized activity (for example running) can be used to strengthen or weaken (as in this case) the emotion recognition result.

System for EMG/ECG measurements

Ancona, September, 2017. Within the research cooperation with Università Politecnica delle Marche (Italy) sharing of experiences in measurement and processing of biovital data is taking place for already many years. During the last of regular research stays in Ancona the new wireless system for EMG/ECG measurments was presented by Prof. Paolo Crippa for the researchers from University of Konstanz.

Scope

Healthy and good sleep is a prerequisite for a rested mind and body. Both form the basis for physical and mental health. The frequency of medically diagnosed sleep disorders increases from the age of 40. The aim of this project is the continuous monitoring of vital data of patients during sleep over long periods using exclusively non-invasive technologies. The system offers an opportunity to enhance the quality of life of an ageing society by putting the collection of sleep data at the center of the analysis and making the data available for medical evaluations.

Objective

The Project aims to monitor vital signs during sleep and over long periods in the home environment of the patients through the exclusive use of non-invasive technologies. The proposed project aims to develop a system (including both the software and the hardware) for automatically collecting data relevant to sleep. The system would provide recommendations (e.g., Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) based) and verify compliance. Continuously measured values (e.g., sleep/wake state, respiration, or heart rate during sleep) are compared with the recommendations and readjusted if necessary.

Research Questions

1. How does the sleep quality of older people differ from average assumptions, and how can rule-based systems or machine learning improve the ability to personalize scoring?
2. How can non-invasive sleep quality measurement support sleep therapy support?
3. Is there a reduced set of vital signs that can be used to determine sleep phases, and how well can these parameters be captured?
4. Are there significant differences in vital signs between older women and men?

Using a non-invasive and unobtrusive network of sensors the system captures vital data from the patient in order to extract valuable sleep information and identify potential disorders using Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning technologies.

Using IoT protocols, cloud based technologies, and fog computing the system is able to process large amount of information, improve machine learning models without jeopardizing patients privacy.

Development

General Strategy

The Core component provides the basic functionality of an embedded computer and implements the interfaces to the other components.
Algorithms process the signal data using different intelligent techniques to analyse the sleep quality and relevant vital data in a personalized way.
A non-invasive network of Hardware sensors captures vital data of the patient.
An API provides an open interface to external platforms.
A Responsive Application shows data in a suitable way for patients, physicians and other target groups.

Testing FSR Sensors

Initial testing is being performed using Force Sensing Resistors (FSR). These sensors deliver a variable electrical resistance as exposed to physical force or pressure applied to them—putting them in the broader category of piezoresistive devices. Typical construction consists of a membrane-like flexible substrate that is printed with two unconnected halves of an interdigitated circuit. When the sensor is in a neutral state, the circuit remains open, and electricity is unable to pass from one wire to the other.

Optimizing Solution

Currently, laboratory is testing different distributions of FSR-sensors with various combination in order to find the most efficient and optimized solution in terms of sensitivity, reliability, and signal quality. However, the solution is not restricted only to FSR sensors but further investigations on the piezoresistive, strain gauge, and fiber bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been planned.

Several European academic and industrial partners covering broad range of expertise from electrical and mechanical engineering to physicians, data and computer science have come together in a interactive and dynamic discussion led by HTWG Konstanz (UC-Lab) in order to push the state of the start and moving on the edging of the field.

Tagung: Smart-Future-Living-Bodensee

Die Hochschule Konstanz veranstaltet gemeinsam mit der Züricher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften eine Fachtagung mit dem Titel „Smart-Future-Living Bodensee“ in Konstanz. Die Konferenz beschäftigt sich mit der Fragestellung, in wie weit die neuesten Technologien das zukünftige Leben in Smart Homes unterstützt und was zu tun ist, um den Markt der breiten Öffentlichkeit zu erschließen.

Eine maßgebliche Herausforderung der Zukunft, wie sie auch die Vereinten Nationen in ihrer Agenda 2030 beschreiben, kann nur durch die gezielte Vernetzung diverser Fachrichtungen gelingen. Insbesondere der nachhaltigere Umgang mit den uns zur Verfügung stehenden Ressourcen muss die Industriestaaten in den kommenden Jahrzehnten beschäftigen. Die Konferenz „Smart-Future-Living Bodensee“ soll einen Beitrag hierzu leisten. Hierbei sollen renommierte Vertreter/innen aus der Industrie und der Wissenschaft, aber auch Nachwuchswissenschaftler/innen über die einschlägigen Disziplinen hinweg sich in dem Bereich austauschen. So soll der Grundstein für Strategien und Projekte gelegt werden, welche nicht nur grenzüberschreitend, sondern auch interdisziplinär für eine zukunftsweisende Forschungsarbeit im Bodenseeraum stehen.

Der Grundgedanke der Konferenz ist, dass jede Disziplin schon heute für sich gesehen über die notwendigen Technologien verfügt, um einen angemessenen Ressourcenverbrauch in unserem täglichen Leben zu realisieren und dabei die Lebensqualität, zum Beispiel auch mit Lösungsansätzen aus dem Assisted Living, zu erhöhen. Ziel der Konferenz ist der Wissenstransfer über die Disziplinen und Grenzen hinweg. So sollen die persönlichen Kontakte zu grenzüberschreitenden Folgeprojekten führen.

Schüler des SummerCamps 2017 entwickeln eine Steuerung für E-Autos

Konstanz, Juli 20, 2017. Prof. Im Rahmen der gemeinsamen Veranstaltung von HTWG und Uni Konstanz entwickeln die Schüler auf dem Camp der HTWG eine Fernsteuerung für batteriegetriebene Elektroautos. Die Fahrzeuge werden auf Basis einer Intel Edison-Plattform programmiert und anschließend mit einem Playstation-Kontroller gesteuert.

Modular horizontal networking embedded in a Smart Service World

Dormbirn, June 22, 2017. Prof. Dr. Seepold reported about the work of the regional cluster Smart Home & Living Baden-Württemberg e.V. during the uDay 2017 event organized by FH Vorarlberg. The main results of the working groups Modularity and Communication have been presented. The first group is chaired by Prof. Seepold and the second one by Prof. Martínez Madrid from Reutlingen University.

Non-invasive Sleep Phase Detection

Seville/Granada, April 28, 2017. Maksym Gaiduk reported during the IWBBIO conference about the first prototype of a sensor grid for pressure and movement detection. The system represented in this work classifies respiration and body movement with only one type of sensor and also in a non-invasive way. The sensor used is a pressure sensor. This sensor is low cost and can be used for commercial proposes. The system was tested by carrying out an experiment that recorded the sleep process of a subject.

Non-invasive Sleep Phase Detection

Konsanz, March 23, 2017. Non-invasive Sleep Phase Detection by Using Pressure-Sensitive Sensors was the topic of the presentation of Agnes Klein's Master Thesis. Agnes says that she investigated on a new approach to classify sleep phases, based on the parameters of body movement, heartbeat and respiration. She would like to propose her approach as a first step to offer light-weighted alternatives to classical overnight polysomnography (PSG). She could show that even with a reduced set of parameters mean agreement ratios of sleep phases detection can lead to promising results. The work has been supervised in cooperation by Prof Dr. Ralf Seepold (HTWG Konstanz) and Prof. Dr. Thomas Penzel (Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin).
