Augsburg, October 6, 2026
Today at ๐๐ ๐ง ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฒ (60th Annual Conference of the German Society for Biomedical Engineering (VDE|DGBMT) hosted by the University of Augsburg, we had the pleasure of bringing together researchers from different institutions and disciplines for our Focus Session Challenges and opportunities to enhance diagnosis of comorbid sleep disorders via AI-powered wearable devices

The session addressed an important question for the future of sleep medicine:
The contributions covered a broad spectrum of this challenge: digital sleep medicine and telemonitoring, the accuracy of wearables and digital sleep diaries compared with polysomnography, AI-powered wearable devices for comorbid sleep disorders, phenotyping of obstructive sleep apnea, and the opportunities and limitations of foundation models in sleep research.
What I particularly appreciated was the combination of technological innovation with a critical view on These aspects will be essential if AI-based sleep technologies are to move from research prototypes to tools that can genuinely support patients and healthcare professionals.
Many thanks to Christoph Schรถbel, Konstantin Popov, Giulia Maria Mattia
๐๐ฒ๐ถ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ด, Dagmar Krefting, and Tugce Canbaz-Gรผmรผssu and everyone who contributed to the discussions and exchange.
It was a great opportunity to connect perspectives from ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด, ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ด๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฝ ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ and to continue building bridges between methodological research and clinical practice. Thanks also to the ๐๐ ๐ง ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ด๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ and the ๐๐๐๐ ๐ง ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐๐ป๐ถ๐๐ and my Co-Chair Giulia Mattia for providing the platform for this Focus Session.
